What is Mitzvah Day?
|
The Mitzvah Day vision is of a day where Jews lead the way, one day a year enjoying giving back, making a difference, all together.
Mitzvah Day is a Jewish led day of social action. On Mitzvah Day, around the world, thousands of people take part in hands on projects, without fundraising, to support existing charities and to build stronger communities.
Our mission is to reduce hardship and poverty, to help our environment and to bring a little joy all through volunteering – not by fundraising. It is a way for all of us to make our mark regardless of our affiliation, level of religious conviction, wealth, age, sex or nationality.
Mitzvah Day is for all those touched by the Jewish community – including Partners from other faiths - building local communities, supporting existing charities and encouraging participation in social action. Mitzvah Day is the focus of enthusiasm, energy and activity in social action throughout the community.
"Every day is a day for doing mitzvot, but Mitzvah Day asks us to focus, collectively as a community, on the mitzvoth of chessed and tzedek, reaching out to those in need of helping, honouring our ancient mandate to be true to our faith while being a blessing to others regardless of their faith. I love the idea of Mitzvah Day, and having seen it in action I am even more impressed by the way it has inspired thousands throughout our community. I wish it continued and ever greater success."
(Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks)
Mitzvah Day Reunited
Aimed at those who might not naturally get involved with their synagogue, Mitzvah Day Reunited will work with charities to find simple projects that appeal to Young Professionals. In conjunction with the JCC for London, the aim is to bring together old (or existing) groups of friends to participate in great projects. One day of action, with no commitment, no planning and no need to be a member of an organisation. It is also available to those who may want to come alone or in smaller groups and we will put your team together for you – again simple, fun and really worth while.
Mitzvah Day UK became a registered charity in 2008 having started in the UK with Founding Partner the JCC for London and based on the American concept of Mitzvah Day.
Mitzvah Day works in partnership with the Jewish Chronicle, Jewish Volunteering Network, Pears Foundation, UJIA, Shoresh Trust, Jewish Social Action Month, J-Hub, Ham and High, National Sewa Day, Times Series and Jewish News.
